METAL ROOFS:
Metal roofing is becoming more and more popular as composition shingles rise in price. We believe metal is an excellent alternative. You can drive around your neighborhood and see metal roofs in many different types and installed on all types of homes. The key to the longevity of a metal roof is how the roof is installed. Is all the flashing installed properly? Eave metal edging, chimney and skylight flashing, and the vent pipes are the areas that take extra care and experience to do correctly. At Hartman Roofing we understand the cost associated with installing metal roofing and we make sure the metal roofing we install will give you years of worry-free service.
Metal roofing benefits are lightweight, strong, fire resistance, and energy efficient. A Hartman Roofing metal roof will carry the Class 4 hail resistance rating. This rating will get the homeowner a discount off his insurance premiums. The one drawback to the Class 4 discount is the insurance companies require the homeowner to sign a “cosmetic endorsement” which means the insurance will not pay for any damage on the roof if they consider it cosmetic. This should be considered very carefully since a new metal roof is so expensive in relationship to the small discount the insurance offers.
The best looking and the most expensive metal roofs are often called a Standing Seam. This refers to a seam that is mechanically hemmed every 12 to 24 inches depending on the look you want to achieve. The big advantage of a Standing Seam is there is no exposed fasteners on the roof. The panels are attached to the roof deck with metal clips and screws. These clips are hidden with the next panel. Standing Seam roofs can vary in thickness or what is often called the gauge. Hartman Roofing prefers to install a 24 gauge panel because it holds up better in hail and does not warp (“Oil Can”) like thinner metal but the thicker the gauge the higher the cost. Oil Canning is a common term used and it is caused by the metal panels expanding and contracting in the heat and cold. All Standing Seam metal does have some oil canning but at Hartman Roofing our years of experience have taught us some tricks to minimize this.
Below are 4 common metal roof profiles. These roofs are considered a more standard panel while the Standing Seam metal panels are custom made for your home. Therefore these standard panels will be lower in price than a Standing Seam. It is important to talk to your Hartman Roofing representative to see which profile works best for your home and budget. There is much to consider when choosing a metal roof. Let us help answer your questions and concerns.
